Reading aloud is a long-standing social tradition. Historically, families often read together as a form of entertainment, and factory workers had books read to them as a way to relieve the tedium. Naperville Public Library is reaching out in that tradition with its Read Aloud Book Club for adults who wish to enjoy and explore the written word in this historical format. The book club is open to all adult readers, especially those who are learning English. Short stories will be read at a pace determined by the group.

Bring a sack lunch to the library’s lunchtime lecture series at 12:30 p.m., and stay for an engaging lecture beginning at 1 p.m. This month, join historian Sarah Okner as she discusses life in a Japanese-American internment camp. Drawn from first-hand accounts from her grandparents and 15 years of research, Okner illustrates the details of daily life that more than 120,000 people of Japanese heritage (most American citizens) endured following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Forcibly removed from their homes and relocated to remote camps, they would spend the rest of the war here.

During this child-and-parent book discussion group, the child and parent/adult will read the selected book together, then attend the club’s meeting to discuss the book with others while enjoying a cookie or two. Each book will be chosen at the preceding meeting and listed on this calendar. The library will have multiple copies of each title available for checkout. Practice using great features that will make it easier to calculate formulas, analyze trends and apply formatting in spreadsheets. *Program requires advance registration with a fee and is limited to 12 participants.
This class has a non-refundable attendance fee for each class that must be paid at the time of registration. Class is appropriate for adults and students age 13 or older unless otherwise noted. Registrations for this class is taken at the computer lab desks.
The fees for these classes are:
Naperville Public Library card holders: $10
Non-Naperville Public Library card holders: $20

Participants can transfer to another class with one week’s notice. If individuals cannot attend a class for any reason, they should inform the computer lab staff so the spot may be available to an individual on the waiting list.
